An Important Message to Parents about Kids Safety Online:

In order to compile this website (www.Kids.CentralVirginia.net), I have visited hundreds of sites on the Internet, which list and rate children's web sites and educational sites.  Although I did not visit every site on every list, I  selected from those lists the pages which appeared to have to the most value and quality.  Once I selected a page, I personally visited the page.  Then I conferred with my ten- year-old daughter, who is in the fourth grade in the Lynchburg Public School System.

She and I have agreed that the sites presented here are the best sites for children based on the following criteria:

• The site is rich in educational content.

• The site's content is well-written and interesting.

• The site would be helpful to children who would like to do research on the Internet.

• The site covers a particular topic better than other similar sites.

• The site's presentation is such that children will be inspired to learn more about the topic covered.

• The site contains no adult themes, hate messages, violence, racial or religious discrimination or other materials not suitable for small children.

As you visit these sites, if you find any material which you think is inappropriately placed here, please let me know.  Although I fully support the freedom of the press and freedom of information, I feel that parents need to control the timing of information that is presented to children.  What is appropriate for older children may be inappropriate for younger children.  I will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and will remove pages which do not meet our "Kids' Safe" criteria.

We also want you to know that we will never sell any advertising on the Kid's pages.  Some of the sites on our list (Disney, for example) do sell products through their pages, but we have included those sites because they have a significant amount of material that is educational or simply fun for children.  Even though the material on these pages is safe for children, it is important that you monitor your children's use of the sites, because some sites ask for children's names and other information to enter clubs and contests.  

Accounting & Computer Enterprises, Inc. and The Central Virginia Business Directory will never use information submitted by children for any reason other than contacting them to let them know they won a prize or that they will have their picture listed on the "Children's Artwork" page.   However, we cannot guarantee that other companies will have the same policy.   We recommend caution and monitoring  whenever your children are using the Internet.

We receive no payments of any kind in response to any of the listings on these pages.  These pages are strictly a community service we perform because we feel it is important that children receive the maximum value possible from their Internet experience.  While it is true that there are dangerous materials on the Internet, it is also true that there is much that is valuable and good.  By promoting and supporting what is good and bypassing what is bad, we hope to encourage the proliferation and growth of the former.  If you would like to find software to block unsuitable Internet materials, here is the result of a Google search on the keywords "children Internet monitor"  Also, check the Kid's safe software recommended by "SafeSurf" at: http://www.www.KidsSafeNet.com
